Mercado de Escravos

Where the first slaves were brought to Portugal from Africa.

The lagos slave Market (Mercado de Escravos) is located in the main square near the Church of St. Antonio in the historic centre of Lagos.

In 1441, the first slaves were brought to Portugal from Africa, marking the beginning of a lucrative trade that would last several hundred years, right up until the end of last century. The Mercado de Escravos first began trading in 1444 and since then the building has been used as a home for inspectors and customs officals, the home guard and military personal. On the ground floor, where the original slave market was, is now a public art gallery.

The exhibition gives visitors a journey through time and a greater knowledge of the arrival of the first African slaves to the European territory and of the economic, social and cultural circumstances which favoured the proliferation of this market.
